Tom, I highly recommend it. It is extremely "woo-woo" however. If you can suspend your skepticism, you may find it very helpful. It's actually based on the 12-step alcoholics anonymous program, So it's heavily invested in a therapeutic model. That was one nice thing about doing it in a group; we all read it aloud together and Made Fun of the ridiculous parts, but then were able to move on to the useful parts. And sometimes the ridiculous parts were sort of useful too. I am not sure I would have gotten through all 12 weeks without a group, But I know several people who have done it on their own successfully. (apologies for the typos I am doing this with voice recognition on the freeway. Oh my God, I just crossed into New Mexico. I thought that would never happen.)

I appreciate your response very much Karl. It is very very very hard to discuss. We should discuss it, and we are! And that's good. I'm a writer so I like writing, and I love the potentials of the internet, but by skippy if it ain't easy to just fling words around and comments hither and yon yeah?
Sometimes i worry that dialogue isn't entirely possibly on the internet because it isn't intimate enough. I know I've said things I would NEVER have said in person, online, because I didn't know who those people were...
This is why I really appreciate you returning and telling me more about you. I really consider that a positive kind act.
And as for prison rape jokes? I do think they come from people's desire for dominance and a culture that accepts that form of dominance as a good kind of punishment. So how we deal with that dynamic, that trend, that inner desire is important. We all feel the desire to right wrongs...ever see the video where the capuchin monkeys don't get equal pay for equal tasks (cucumbers aren't as delicious as grapes) and they act out! violently! So it's in our nature to react badly to injustice...
Compassion is the missing piece and something we don't teach much in America.
I hope you have a good weekend, Karl.

I wish I hadn't made the prison rape comment. It was low of me. I have railed against those who take prison rape lightly myself... and, now I find myself doing the same thing.

The slip is, of course, revealing. Rationally, I don't want to see rapists be raped and brutalized in prison. Emotionally, however, I kind of do.

Rape is an act of dominance, it is about power and control. I don't like people who prey on others and I have a visceral response to rapists and other bullies. Bluntly, I have never been victimized, nor has anyone close to me (that I know of). And, yet, I don't respond to rape the way I do to other crimes. Rape makes me angry. I doubt I am alone in this.

This doesn't mean that this anger should translate into actual punishment. But, ignoring it is also unwise.

Because rape is such a gut wrenching subject, it can be complicated to discuss. That doesn't mean, however, that we shouldn't discuss it. It is for this reason that I came to St. Amant's defense. I don't know the woman, but I read her article and the others that followed when a friend called them to my attention. A friend who was very upset by St. Amant's words. And, I can see why they would cause offense.

However, I can also see how the O's words can cause offense. And my own.

It is a hard subject to write on... and, I worry that if we jump on people for writing about it inelegantly, but without actual malice (not for calling the girl a slut, but for not making it clear enough that we are not calling her a slut)... that we will stifle dialogue.

Anyway, I've learned from this: Thanks to the O for her post and to you for replying to my comment.
